An "impacted" wisdom tooth refers to a third molar that has failed to emerge fully into its expected position. This failure to erupt properly might occur because there is not enough room in the jaw to accommodate the tooth, the tooth's eruption path is obstructed by other teeth or because the angle of the impacted tooth is improper.
Wisdon teeth are removed for multiple reasons. These can range from simple crowding to infection to the formation of cysts and tumours that can destroy the jaw bone.
At the Institute of Facial Surgery, these teeth can be removed using Local Anesthetic, sedation techniques (either oral or intravenous), or being put fully asleep with a General Anesthetic technique. These options are able to be offered due to the fact that the Institute of Facial Surgery is a fully accredited surgical suite, inspected by both the Alberta Medical Association and the Alberta Dental Association.
